One Day Experience
If you’re looking for something quieter, more personal, and far from the usual tourist spots, Lamandau is the place.
This is not a busy park.
Not a crowded feeding station.
Lamandau is a protected rainforest where orangutans live as they should, free, wild, and undisturbed. Visitor access is very limited, so when you’re here, it truly feels like entering a place that only a few people ever get to experience.
Your day begins with a pick-up around 08:00 AM, either from your hotel in Pangkalan Bun or directly from the airport.
From there, you’ll take a short drive to a small riverside village called Sega Village. This is where everything starts to slow down. You’ll board a traditional wooden boat (getek) and begin cruising along the Arut River.
The journey itself is already part of the experience. Wildlife often appears naturally along the way. You might see proboscis monkeys resting in the trees, macaques moving in groups, birds crossing the river, or even a crocodile quietly passing by.
After about two hours, the river begins to change. The water turns darker, almost tea-colored. This is the famous black-water river, a sign of a healthy and untouched forest ecosystem.
You’ll stop at Siswoyo Post, a small ranger station deep inside the reserve. It’s simple, quiet, and surrounded by dense forest.
Here, you can take a break, enjoy your lunch, and listen to your guide share stories about how this area protects and rehabilitates orangutans. It adds a deeper meaning to everything you’re about to experience.
In the early afternoon, the journey continues with a short forest walk of around 20–25 minutes. It’s an easy trek, suitable for most visitors.
And then, if nature allows, you’ll see them.
Orangutans don’t appear on command. That’s what makes this moment special. When they do show up, moving slowly between branches or coming down to feed, it feels real, raw, and completely unstaged.
What makes this experience stand out:
It’s not about chasing the perfect photo.
It’s about the feeling of being there.
After the visit, you’ll return to the boat and travel back along the same river.
This part of the journey often feels different, more relaxed and reflective. You might spot more wildlife, or simply sit back and enjoy the calm surroundings.
By late afternoon, you’ll arrive back at the village and continue your transfer to the hotel.
Keep it simple and comfortable:
Because it feels real.
No crowds, no rush, no pressure.
Just a quiet day in the rainforest, with a chance to see orangutans the way they’re meant to be seen.
Access to Lamandau is limited to only a few visitors each day.
If you’re interested, it’s best to book in advance, as spots can fill up quickly, especially during peak season.
If this sounds like your kind of adventure, we’d love to help you make it happen.
